Shure SM48
« on: August 17, 2013, 12:08:48 PM »
My cheap little Karaoke practice mic finally went out on me yesterday and so I'm looking for a new Chrom mic for practice and the occasional open mic night . I know the SM57 and SM58 are the recommended ones according to " Harp On" but have any of you Chrom players used the SM48? It's only $50 and works good with my budget right now. Is it a good practice mic ? Thanks

What about this one ?

Thanks Ed. I guess it's not so much about the mic I'm using as it is about my actual playing. If if it doesn't sound good acoustically, it's only going to sound just as bad only louder with a Mic and Amp. It's like the Chrom I'm using, some of my best practice sessions where with lower end Chroms. A $45.WH12 vs $200 + CX-12, sometimes on playback they sound the same depending on how I play the song. Thanks I'll do little more research on mics.

For recording, I'd think a large capsule condenser would be terrific, but are a little tricky and pick up every little noise around you.  You could probably find the Audio Technica 2020 usb for $50 used on ebay.  You could go straight into your computer and get decent results, depending on your sound card.  It would free your hands up, too.

The SM58 is a good quality mic.

I have a Shure PE515 that I bought decades ago, and use both as a vocal and amp mic. I see them now on ebay for $23+.

The SM48 is very close to the industry standard SM58; both use cardiod pattern with dynamic cartridge.  The 58 freq. response is 50-15,000, the 48 is from 55-14,000.  You get a little more bass response and a touch more upper range with the 58.  If you can get an SM48 for $50, go for it!
Cheers,
Gorf
