Buy good connectors (Switchcraft or another good brand).
Get the best-shielded cable you can get.
For XLR you probably want to make
balanced cables
.
For 1/4 inch cables consider whether you want any right-angled connectors (can save a lot of space).
Make sure you add some strain relief (some robust heat shrink should do).
Gold plating is nice but probably won't really make any noticable difference.
That's about it
You won't save a fortune but your own cables will be top quality and will still be cheaper than store-bought cables.
When cables eventually fail you can often cut several inches off the offending end and re-do the connectors and get more life out of the cable.

Thanks. Pretty good advice. Yes i definitely want balanced.
I got 100 ft of mogami balanced dual copper shielded cable.
7 pairs of neutrik connectors.
For under $100
Enough for 6 15' cables and a 10'. I doubt i could have bought them assembled for anywhere close to that.
The guage is on the thinner side, but it looks like quality cable.
